Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) have significantly impacted the field of gynecology and obstetrics throughout history. Venereal diseases such as gonorrhea and chancroid were prevalent in ancient Roman baths, while syphilis, introduced to Europe in the fifteenth century via Columbus’s voyages, spread widely and affected various social strata, including the clergy and nobility. Notably, the herpes simplex virus was identified by Hippocrates, and later recognized by Emperor Tiberius for its transmissibility. Obstetrics faced historical challenges, particularly in areas of hygiene and societal regard, until the introduction of antiseptic handwashing drastically reduced puerperal fever mortality. Advances such as the identification of the distinct nature of gonorrhea and syphilis and the introduction of modern microbiological techniques have improved medical understanding and treatment. Recent developments like the discovery of HIV/AIDS and the role of HPV in cervical cancer have underscored the evolving landscape of STDs. Today’s global health challenges, including multidrug-resistant pathogens and pandemics like COVID–19, necessitate comprehensive infectious disease education in medical training for optimal patient care.
