The purpose of this chapter is to review the current state of knowledge regarding evidence-based practices intended to promote independent living skills in the community. Before attempting to establish the skills needed by young autistic adults to live independently in the community, we consider what community is and what it means to be independent and then explore the continuum of independent community-based living. We review the empirically based literature and the policies that help promote independent living and offer a case example of a college-based transition program that provides community-based support to young autistic adults and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We conclude with recommendations for future policy, research, and practice.
