Central venous catheter placement is a routine medical procedure that has been incorporated into clinical practice over the last 50 years. It is performed in approximately 8% of hospitalized patients, with over five million central venous catheters being inserted annually in the United States (Kächele M et al., Kidney Int Rep 8:2001–2007, 2023). Central venous access is typically required for specific intravenous therapies, including chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, monitoring central venous and arterial pressure, positioning heart pacemakers, and facilitating extracorporeal therapies such as plasma exchange and hemodialysis. The introduction of both temporary and long-term central venous catheterization in the treatment of both acute and chronic end-stage renal disease has marked a significant breakthrough in the care of these patients. The incorporation of ultrasound techniques into daily clinical practice has dramatically reduced failures and complications associated with central venous catheterization.
