Normal eye alignment at birth is a small exodeviation, and within hours to days, our strong innate convergence (25–30 PD) brings our eyes together to orthotropia. A neonate with esotropia (ET), however, is in trouble as our innate divergence amplitudes are small (6–8 PD) making an esodeviation hard to impossible to fuse. A significant esotropia in a newborn causes cortical suppression, amblyopia of the non-preferred eye if they do not alternate fixation, and loss of binocular visual potential. A persistent esotropia if not treated early in the first several months of life will result in permanent loss of binocular vision and stereoacuity. An esotropia presenting during the first 6 months of life is termed infantile or congenital esotropia. Of the various presentations of infantile esotropia, these are the most common:
