Principles of Strabismus Surgery

Prior to strabismus surgery, an important and seemingly obvious question should be asked: “Why are we operating?” Is our treatment goal to establish binocular fusion, eliminate diplopia, expand the field of binocular vision, correct a compensatory head posture, or simply improve cosmetic appearance? For example, in Duane’s syndrome, the indication for surgery is the presence of a face turn or upshoot not necessarily the size of the deviation.
