From Peel to Pulp: Maximizing Citrus Products and Value Addition

This study investigates comprehensive strategies for optimizing the utilization of citrus fruits, focusing on maximizing both primary products (peel and pulp) and incorporating value addition into the citrus industry. Citrus fruits, renowned for their unique flavor profiles and nutritional richness, generate substantial by-products during processing. Traditional approaches to managing citrus waste have often fallen short of realizing the full potential of these resources. The chapter begins with a detailed analysis of citrus peels, exploring innovative extraction methods to unlock valuable components. Concurrently, the study delves into advanced methods for enhancing citrus pulp extraction yield, paving the way for creating high-value products. Special attention is given to value addition through enzymatic conversion, biorefining, and bioconversion, contributing to a more sustainable and economically viable citrus industry. Integrating value-addition strategies ensures optimal use of citrus Wate products and opens avenues for creating diversified products with enhanced market value. This study provides valued insights for citrus processors, scientists, and industry stakeholders, fostering the development of novel approaches to elevate the economic and environmental sustainability of the citrus sector. Moreover, the study evaluates the environmental impact of conventional waste management practices in the citrus sector and proposes eco-friendly alternatives. By embracing the circular economy model, the research aims to minimize waste while maximizing resource efficiency, thereby enhancing the overall sustainability of the citrus production chain.
