Globally grown and consumed citrus fruits are well known for their nutritional advantages, which include high vitamin C content and bioactive substances. Nevertheless, a significant amount of waste is produced during the industrial processing of citrus fruits, especially from the peels, pulp, and seeds, which make up 50–70% of the fruit’s mass. Citrus trash has been used historically for a variety of purposes, ranging from conventional agricultural and therapeutic uses to industrial usage in the manufacturing of essential oils and animal feed. The potential of citrus waste is highlighted by recent developments in a number of industries, including bioenergy, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and sustainable packaging. Citrus waste usage is becoming more economically viable and sustainable, thanks to advancements in extraction techniques and biotechnological approaches that are in line with circular economy concepts. This chapter examines the development, present practices, and probable future directions of citrus waste valorization, with a focus on the advantages for human health, the environment, and the economy.
