The herpes simplex virus (HSV), as well as other viruses (including the AIDS virus), are capable of establishing connections between two cells for rapid transmission of viral particles from one cell to another. This is referred to as a “viral synapse”, similar to the synapse that represents a functional contact zone established between two neurons.
