This chapter introduces the main aspects of internal gravity waves, initially considering linear waves and subsequently weakly nonlinear waves. We first study the case of a continuously stratified fluid; we then move on to the simpler, but very significant, case of a two-layer fluid. We touch on the phenomenology and generation mechanisms of internal waves and finally consider nonlinear effects, with particular reference to internal solitons.
