In this chapter we begin by discussing the nature of fluids and the differences between gases and liquids from a microscopic point of view. The continuum hypothesis is then introduced, which underpins the mathematical treatment of fluid dynamics. Galileo's principle of relativity and the Newtonian laws of dynamics are then recalled. Finally, the division of the text into two parts concerning fluid dynamics in inertial and rotating reference frames is discussed.
