Clinical, Imaging, and Histological Findings in Infectious Lesions of the Face, Ears, and Neck

In the realm of dermatology and infectious disease, accurate diagnosis and effective management hinge on a thorough understanding of both clinical and imaging findings. This chapter explores the use of advanced imaging techniques—including ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and 3D imaging—in conjunction with clinical assessments to distinguish between herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, herpes zoster (shingles), and cellulitis. While HSV and herpes zoster present with distinct clinical features such as vesicular eruptions and dermatomal distributions, cellulitis is characterized by diffuse inflammation and swelling. Advanced imaging modalities offer enhanced visualization of these conditions, revealing subtle differences in tissue involvement, lesion morphology, and disease progression. Ultrasonography provides real-time, dynamic imaging of soft tissues and can detect inflammatory changes and fluid collections. MRI with surface coil offers detailed cross-sectional images, allowing for the assessment of deeper tissue involvement and potential complications. Meanwhile, 3D advanced imaging techniques provide comprehensive, three-dimensional views that aid in evaluating complex cases. This chapter aims to integrate these imaging modalities with clinical findings, offering a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and managing herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and cellulitis.
