The Northern Author and the Book of the Covenant

The author of the prose story about the legal revelation at Sinai, the covenant and the breaking of the covenant by the sin of the Golden-Calf, was also the final editor of the legal code known as the “Covenant Code” Exodus 20:19-23:19. He included there a law against the making of “gods of Gold” (Ex. 20:20) which he meant as polemic of the official cultic symbol of the Northern-Kingdom, I.E. the Golden Calf of Bethel.
