Mental illness is prevalent throughout the world, with almost 1 billion individuals suffering from a mental disorder. In the United States, an estimated 52.9 million adults aged 18 or older were affected by substance misuse or any mental illness in 2020 (2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). The National Alliance on Mental Illness estimates that 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses begin by 14 years and 65% of all lifetime mental illnesses begin by 24 years. The global economic burden associated with mental illness, including poor health and reduced productivity, was estimated at approximately $2.5 trillion in 2010 (The Lancet Global Health, 2020) and is expected to increase annually. Thus, there is a great unmet need for improving our understanding of the foundations of mental disorders and their treatment.
