The pile load test is one of the most widely used direct test methods in the geotechnical engineering field to ascertain the safe loads on piles and their geotechnical capacity relative to the strata in which they are installed. Pile load tests were conducted either on working piles or test piles, which are two types of pile load tests named initial and routine load tests. There are three different loading conditions termed as vertical load test, lateral load test, and pull-out load tests, which are used to determine the compression, lateral, and uplift capacities of the pile. This paper describes the methodology adopted to conduct the initial pile load test (vertical and pull-out) on a bored cast in-situ (BCIS) pile for the contaminated rainwater storage (CRWS) tank location at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), Assam. As per the Geotechnical investigation report, the strata consist of a thin layer of silty sand sandwiched between two layers of clayey silt. The cut-off level of the pile was fixed at 13 m from FGL, based on the functional requirements of the CRWS tank. The test setup was prepared by inserting a primary liner with a 1000 mm diameter to excavate the soil up to the pile cut-off level (i.e., a depth of 13 m). The soil within the 1000 mm diameter was then removed to avoid the contribution of topsoil to the shaft friction of the pile, thereby representing the actual site conditions. After the soil removal, a secondary liner with a 600 mm diameter was inserted up to 0.5 m below the pile cut-off level. Following the installation of the secondary liner, the pile casting was completed, and the testing proceeded. This paper provides a detailed description of the site location, geological conditions, test pile details, test setup, testing methodology, challenges encountered during testing, observations, and test results.
