A Review on Geothermal Energy Piles—A Modern Environmentally Sustainable Foundation
摘要
The geothermal energy pile technology is progressively enticing recognition in the construction field for controlling the temperatures within the buildings, as an economical and environmentally approachable technique. The seasonal fluctuations of earth temperature are negligible after shallow depths, and for this reason, pile foundations are a great option for gathering geothermal energy. Geothermal energy piles form the principal component in the Ground Source Heat Pump system which is used to transfer the heat between the ground and buildings. This GSHP system principally contains the heat pump unit, the heat exchanger along with heat transfer pipes. Heat exchangers are implemented inside pile foundations to create the Geothermal Energy Pile and use the steady temperature beneath the earth's surface as a heat source in the heating and cooling of buildings. This helps in the depletion of harmful gas emissions which are otherwise emitted due to the use of conventional cooling appliances. Generally, geothermal energy piles are of two types—driven (displacement) and bored (non-displacement) piles. The present work intends to bring significant substantiation from available literature on the practical applicability and implementation processes of the energy piles, their types, designs, construction, benefits, and challenges with due consideration to the environmental impact and economic viability. Moreover, a few case studies across the globe that focus on the use, various advantages along limitations of implementing thermal piles are summarized. Additionally, an effort is also made to compare different types of geothermal energy piles. This paper comprises a compilation of the literature available on the geothermal energy pile foundations so that it gains momentum in the application of this technique in the form of feasible substitute energy sources with a reduction in the carbon footprint, especially for the Indian construction industry.
