Gianfranco Brebbia is a unique figure in Italian experimental cinema, with around 130 films made between 1962 and 1973, of which 43 have been found to date. Working as a tailor in the city of Varese, he was an assiduous spectator of cinema and practiced photography and cinema as a passionate amateur. His first films were noticed and rewarded at amateur film festivals for their originality. His encounter with the films of Mekas, Brakhage, as well as with Italian experimental filmmakers like Bargellini and Bacigalupo, who had made their first films in the same years, and the effervescence of independent American and Italian experimental cinema corresponded with an intense filmmaking activity and experimentation, an almost mystical poetic quest for new cinematographic, visual and sound forms, which he wanted to make more and more radical. Thus, he explored multiple forms of cinematographic experimentation, according to a personal vision and choice of themes: images of nature, portraits of women and children, from his city of Varese. Thus, Brebbia created a particular cinematographic work, which transcends the uncertain category of the “amateur filmmaker”, claimed by filmmakers such as Maya Deren or Brakhage.
