In the recent geography of contemporary art, Italian videos and artist’s films have played a comparatively small role in the international debate. As a matter of fact, the presence of Italian artists working with moving images in international exhibitions such as Documenta, Venice Biennale, Manifesta and others, has not been particularly consistent over the past two decades. The reasons for this absence are not easy to identify. Moving between the local or marginalized art worlds and a larger global arena, this essay aims to reflect upon the necessity to account for the alternative spaces and the main characters of the Italian art scene, from 2000 onwards. Starting with the study and the analysis of some different private databases and archives, this chapter aims to sketch a brief history of contemporary Italian video and artist’s film, focusing on the problematic relationship between the centre and the margins of global art.

摘要
