This chapter describes the evolution and history of navigation in the United States through patient navigation milestones as well as nurse navigation achievements. National programs that have supported the concepts of navigation in communities and healthcare institutions are recognized as they have become a pillar of support for navigation. National accreditation programs in the field are acknowledged as well as their requirements for navigation. The building blocks of this profession such as role delineation, competencies, certification, and metrics to support value are explored. This chapter concludes with examples of collaboration between the roles. Patient and nurse navigation evolved concurrently and when working together provide a constant and trusted source of care for the patient while dealing with complex cancer care systems.
