The chapter discusses the evolution of project management in Africa and its role as an emerging profession and opportunity provider for prospective professionals who plan to open their careers in the novel field of project management. It examines the prospects of project management (PM) and looks into the status, maturity, and opportunities in the field based on the African context. Case studies of four African countries (South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria) were further considered. A Co-word Analysis Technique (CWAT) was adopted to visualize and uncover patterns and emerging themes by analyzing the co-occurrence of keywords. Data for the co-occurrence was generated from the Scopus research database. The result revealed that South Africa has the highest adoption and knowledge level of project management. While maturity is still emerging with variations across countries, opportunities still exist in PM across developing countries in Africa and sectors, including infrastructure, ICT, education, and developmental projects. Existing capability and maturity gaps imply that organizations must invest in capabilities, tools, and education to leverage PM opportunities. By highlighting opportunity areas, it can encourage greater adoption of project management. The study results contribute significantly to the PM body of knowledge, help make informed policies, and provide valuable background to help African organizations become more projectified.
