This chapter explores the emerging necessity for hybrid project management approaches and methodologies, combining elements of predictive and adaptive methods in response to varying project demands. This chapter examines the ISO 21502, PMBOK® guidelines, and Agile Practice Guides, which highlight a project manager’s obligation to adapt management strategies to align with project deliverables. Through an extensive literature review and empirical studies, this chapter identifies three main project management approaches: predictive, hybrid, and adaptive. Although each approach is discussed in terms of its suitability for projects with varying levels of scope and deliverable uncertainty, more emphasis is placed on the hybrid approach, which is recognized for its flexibility in integrating the structured nature of the predictive approach with the reactive dynamism of adaptive methodologies. A hybrid approach is particularly beneficial for projects with high uncertainty in customer requirements and deliverables. Therefore, this chapter underscores the importance of developing competencies in project management as a critical factor in project success. It presents a detailed competency development model integrating training activities, including lessons-learned discussions, into project management practices. Furthermore, the research addresses the organizational implications of selecting a project management approach, emphasizing the role of internal and external resources in competency development for all professionals involved in the project. This chapter discusses how project teams, sometimes multidisciplinary teams, can develop the necessary competencies to adapt their management strategies effectively to ensure project success. The chapter concludes by proposing a conceptual framework for integrating competency development into regular project management practices, aligning with recognized standards such as ISO 21502 and PMBOK®. This framework aims to enhance project outcomes and stakeholder satisfaction by fostering a deeper understanding and implementing a hybrid project management approach.
