This chapter explores the application of project management methodologies in an academic research team tasked with creating and publishing a peer-reviewed book. The research question addressed is: How can project management be effectively applied in a large academic research study involving an international team to achieve the objectives of timely completion, budget adherence, scope management, and high-quality scholarly output? The chapter integrates key theories, methods, techniques, and artifacts, guided by best practices from ISO 21502 and the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). A single case study approach is used, examining the successful publication of a book involving 22 team members and 47 stakeholders across 21 countries. The chapter highlights the significance of leadership substitutes theory and technology-facilitated automation in overcoming project challenges, demonstrating the project’s success in achieving its goals five months ahead of schedule and under budget. The findings contribute to the project management body of knowledge by providing practical insights and evidence-based practices for managing complex academic research projects.
