This old article illustrates the similarity between sigmoid colon cancer and upper rectal cancer, in both perioperative and oncological outcomes. This series precedes the introduction of any adjuvant or neoadjuvant treatments. While obsolete in this respect, the design of the present study helps pointing out the effect of surgery alone. Incidentally, the results are also impressive for the more distal rectum, especially considering that all anterior resections were conducted without the use of mechanical staplers.
