Modern medicine is perhaps associated today with a greater patient involvement in the treatment decisions than in the past. The possibility of substantial differences in preferences between patients and their own doctors has emerged. This situation is associated with substantial implications for all practicing physicians, including surgeons. In many cases patients can hold in high regard their quality of life and depending on their individual situations might be willing to accept a greater risk of unsuccessful cancer treatment while physicians are generally more focused on the pursuit of optimal oncologic outcomes.
