This is a prospective randomized study which confirmed the advantages associated with laparoscopic surgery for sigmoid diverticulitis. The authors did everything they could to make the trial blind, including covering the abdomen with a large drape following surgery so that either patients or caregivers would not be able to guess if the patient had undergone a laparoscopic or open operation. The reduction in major postoperative morbidity after laparoscopic surgery has not been uniformly confirmed in other studies, but the recovery advantages have been widely reproduced, thus corroborating the superiority of minimally invasive surgery for this indication.
