Enterocutaneous fistula is often a daunting problem which can have multiple origins, ranging from iatrogenic causes to inflammatory bowel disease. This large experience from a single institution highlights the benefits of resection of the segment having the fistula, which may not be possible in prohibitive operative fields. Importantly, it also underscores the extraordinary importance of the preparatory work which is necessary to optimize the patient condition prior to elective surgery.
