This trial examined the possibility that some patients with rectal cancer could be spared radiotherapy with its inherent toxicity. The design of the trial preceded both the widespread use of MR for locoregional staging and the advent of total neoadjuvant treatment with nonoperative management of rectal cancer. However, it still corroborates the idea that radiotherapy should be used judiciously and selected patient with upper rectal cancer can do oncologically as well with chemotherapy and surgery alone.

摘要

This trial examined the possibility that some patients with rectal cancer could be spared radiotherapy with its inherent toxicity. The design of the trial preceded both the widespread use of MR for locoregional staging and the advent of total neoadjuvant treatment with nonoperative management of rectal cancer. However, it still corroborates the idea that radiotherapy should be used judiciously and selected patient with upper rectal cancer can do oncologically as well with chemotherapy and surgery alone.
