The neonatal EEG, a challenging aspect of neurophysiology, undergoes rapid changes in response to brain development. Positive sharp wave transients, multifocal independent sharp discharges, and sleep spindles mark significant stages. Abnormal patterns, like brief rhythmic discharges, signify potential issues. The EEG aids in diagnosing epilepsy syndromes, including Ohtahara and West syndromes, stressing the importance of early identification. Childhood epilepsy syndromes, like absence epilepsy and benign Rolandic epilepsy, are characterized by distinct EEG signatures. Recognizing these patterns is critical for prompt intervention, especially in epileptic encephalopathies with irreversible cognitive implications.
