Geriatric Trauma
摘要
Geriatric trauma (GT) represents an increasingly important issue, considering its impact on health and social care systems, and a difficult challenge for trauma teams. Even in case of similar mechanism of injury, older patients present higher risk of mortality and morbidity when compared to younger patients. The management of these patients must take into account not only all the physio-pathologic derangements caused by the trauma itself, but also the pre-injury condition of the patient as they modified the stress response: medications taken, comorbidities, and above all, the poor physiologic reserve. Acknowledging the different trauma physiology and the worse outcomes related to severe injuries in GT patients is the first step to provide a tailored therapeutic approach.
