There are about 1350 potentially active volcanoes worldwide, besides the mid-ocean ridges. Around 50–70 volcanoes erupt on land every year, and about 500 of the 1350 active volcanoes have erupted in historical time according to the USGS Volcano Hazards Program. As many as 600 million people live within 100 km of an active or potentially active volcano, but most of the volcanoes are not well monitored.
