Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is currently the most widely performed metabolic-bariatric procedure in the world, with high acceptance among surgeons and patients. Less technical demands, a very low complication rate, and excellent postoperative quality of life are some of the advantages associated with this procedure. However, as it is a gastric-only procedure, and sometimes referred to as “restrictive,” its effectiveness in reducing fat mass and controlling obesity-related disorders, especially in the long term, has often been questioned. Nonetheless, a huge volume of scientific publications has pointed to quite satisfactory results regarding weight loss and remission/improvement of obesity-related disorders, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, and dyslipidemia. Often, the outcomes of the sleeve have been quite similar to those of more complex techniques that bring together higher rate of complications and more deleterious impacts on quality of life. Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to assess the results of the LSG on weight loss and remission/improvement of the main obesity-related disorders.
