This chapter covers a perennial problem, namely the challenges qualitative researchers face in the ethics-review process. These challenges consist of dealing with the historical objections to qualitative research, the use of exclusionary language, concepts, and terms, as well as the advocacy of irrelevant research designs. Covert and overt discrimination in research-ethics review is a timeless and problematic facet of relations with research-ethics committees. Qualitative researchers have, however, often found unique and surprising ways to deal with discrimination.
