Ann “Nan” Fetter Friedlaender was a pioneer in the field of transportation economics, with a particular focus on the trucking and railroad industries. She also made important contributions to public finance, especially regarding the incidence and efficiency consequences of indirect taxes. Beyond her research contributions, Friedlaender was widely respected as an academic leader. She was the first woman to lead the MIT Economics Department, or any department at MIT, and the first dean of an MIT School. Friedlaender was an early and active supporter of the American Economic Association Committee on the Status of Women in Economics and a passionate advocate for women in the field.
