Other Dimensions of Space

Algernon Blackwood’s story “A victim of higher space” introduces a discussion of the challenges of visualizing a fourth spatial dimension. We then trace the historical development of ideas about extra dimensions, touching on Edwin Abbott’s Flatland, Kaluza-Klein theory, and later developments in string theory. We emphasize that, despite the development of compelling mathematical frameworks involving extra dimensions, we currently lack experimental evidence for the physical existence of those higher spatial dimensions.
