Aligning Peri-Urban Areas Toward Sustainable Development Goals: A Case of Pratapsasan—A Peri-Urban Area of Bhubaneswar City
摘要
Peri-urban areas are described as transitional areas or fringe areas of cities or adjoining rural areas, experience constant transformation, and are characterized by a mix of rural and urban activities. Cities have to face the challenge of rapid urbanization and urban sprawl resulting in peri-urban areas getting strongly affected by the expansion processes of the city. The planning of peri-urban areas should not be just an extension of urban activities of the city in rural areas but have its own spatial character. This chapter focuses on sustainable planning principles of peri-urban areas taking the case of Pratapsasan, a fringe area of Bhubaneswar city, which is the capital of the eastern state of Odisha, in India. It is well known for bell metal products since the fourteenth century. The paper tries to frame the planning principles of peri-urban areas by adhering to the sustainable development goals and addressing the concerns of the local community by linking tourism with the crafts and tradition, making food production an integral part of city planning, and integration of the river beds and geomorphology while planning the road network in peri-urban areas. By integrating the market linkages, making all activities community centric, and taking care of the cultural identity and environmental concerns, the proposed development is able to take care of SDG 11 (supporting positive economic, social, and environmental links between urban, peri-urban, and rural areas) very effectively.
