Impact of Evolving Contemporary Social Behaviour on Geoheritage Site from a Geolocation Perspective: A Tale of Queen City of Himalayas—Darjeeling

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) has been the heritage of tradition for the state of West Bengal. Local touristy and natural exquisiteness had received their honorific with the combination of Darjeeling Himalayan Tramways, which are thereafter recognized as train way. By 1879, DHR was erected on the Hill Cart Road. Its societal, cultural and economic value has grown to the point where UNESCO has designated it as a World Heritage Site. But in the modern globalized world with the significance of time and pace, the DHR is fading out its importance. People or the authorities somewhere are neglecting the heritage and its glory. But DHR has a conjugated relationship with the region’s social and biological factors. Thus, the current research focuses on the frightful requirement for recasting the DHR with the new technology to better realize the economic, physical and technological complexes of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and satisfy that aim. This chapter focuses on the preservation measures taken by UNESCO and capabilities taken at the government extent. Primary surveys have been done in 2014, 2017 and 2020. Due to landslides, surveys cannot be done in the other intermediate years. Views of local inhabitants, businessmen and tourists are analysed, and significance is given to their perceptions. The problems of DHR are identified from the root level. Potential solutions are also stated to reduce the problems and revive the glory of DHR again.
