In the most general sense, waves are nature’s way of transmitting energy over large distances while leaving the medium through which the waves travel undisturbed after their passage. Light and sound, as perceived by humans, provide examples, the light being transmitted as the interplay between electric and magnetic fields and sound being transmitted through pressure variations. Visible light is part of the electromagnetic wave spectrum, whereas sound is a mechanical wave.
