The Proposal and Usefulness of a Forearm Muscle Activity Estimation System for the Treatment of Tremor: A Case Study

This study aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of a forearm muscle activity estimation system for selecting Target Muscles for Injection (TMI) in upper limb dystonia. The selection of TMI was based on resting muscle activity, frequency characteristics, and muscle activity during motion. Increased resting overactivity and frequency components in the same band as the tremor were observed in the extensor pollicis brevis (EPB). Additionally, sustained overactivity was noted during wrist dorsiflexion movements, leading to the selection of EPB as the TMI. Post-treatment, tremors were suppressed, and the range of motion in the wrist improved. These findings suggest that the proposed approach is effective in selecting the appropriate TMI for treating tremors in patients with upper limb dystonia.
