Use of Visual and Auditory Biofeedback in Cycling Training for Aerobic Fitness

This paper presents a novel rehabilitation approach for spinal cord injury (SCI) patients, combining high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with stationary cycling, virtual reality (VR) and musical feedback. The system aims to enhance cardiovascular fitness and motor performance through real-time feedback on pedaling intensity, boosting patient’s motivation and engagement. The platform is customizable, adaptable and easy to configure, making it suitable for diverse patient needs. A calibration protocol identified the pedaling intensity required for moderate exercise, and subsequent intensity levels adjustments were applied to target moderate-to-high intensity zones (70–90% of the HRmax). Pilot tests with healthy subjects demonstrated feasibility in maintaining the target intensity and controlling the heart rate using the combined feedback. Integrating VR and musical feedback in stationary cycling shows potential to enhance patient engagement and rehabilitation effectiveness, improving outcomes for SCI patients.
