Significance of Gait Practice in a Spina Bifida Patient with High-Level Paralysis: Muscle Dissection and Rehabilitation for Bilateral Knee Flexion Contractures – A Case Report

There is ongoing debate about whether to provide active rehabilitation focused on walking for spina bifida patients with high-level paralysis. This study examines the progress of a spina bifida patient undergoing gait therapy over a 6-year period. The patient expressed a strong desire to walk and continued therapy even after surgery for knee joint flexion contracture, emphasizing the importance of addressing the patient’s sense of achievement. However, improvements in bone density were found to be insufficient. There is a need to develop robotics and other equipment suitable for early childhood use to enhance the enjoyment of walking and achieve adequate physical activity levels that support bone density growth.
