Clinical Trials in Neurorehabilitation: Development of a Low-Cost Device

Neurorehabilitation aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with neurological injuries. Personalized medical devices have shown significant potential in optimizing clinical trials by providing accurate, real-time data tailored to individual patient needs. This paper discusses developing a low-cost device using Arduino and a force sensor to measure muscle strength and assess fatigue in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. The device aims to provide reliable, daily measurements to evaluate treatment efficacy. The methodology includes defining requirements, conceptual design, prototype development, and extensive testing. Clinical evaluation will assess the device’s effectiveness in a real-world setting. Results from the initial steps show promise in treatment adherence and fatigue assessment. Personalized devices can improve treatment efficacy and patient experience, but challenges like cost and training need addressing. Future studies should focus on integrating advanced technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance these devices’ impact on clinical practice.
