Sustainable Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation

  • Guglielmo Foffani

摘要

The rising cost of brain diseases, estimated at 800 billion euros annually in Europe, highlights the need for effective and cost-effective treatments. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as transcranial static magnetic field stimulation (tSMS), present promising alternatives. tSMS employs neodymium magnets to modulate cortical excitability without the need for expensive equipment or specialized personnel, making it a user-friendly and portable technique suitable for home use. This potential shift of the therapeutic model from outpatient to home-based care could significantly reduce healthcare costs and improve treatment accessibility, particularly for patients with mobility issues or those living in relatively remote areas. Preclinical studies and early randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials have demonstrated promising results in using tSMS to treat conditions such as epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and aiding stroke rehabilitation. Ongoing trials continue to explore its potential, emphasizing its promise as a sustainable and patient-friendly therapy for brain diseases.
