Challenges in Incorporating Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education Institutions

The present study aims to reflect on the challenges of higher education in building a sustainable future. The methodology used is based on a review of recent literature on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in higher education. The study demonstrates the delay in the introduction and objective implementation of the SDGs in the educational system of these institutions. As institutions considered responsible for innovative, creative practices and the promotion of the SDGs, they present feared and fragile actions. At least a clear description of the fulfillment of SDG 4 goals in the quality of education in these institutions was expected. Thus, the study focuses on the topicality and relevance of the topic for HEIs, education, society, and industry. The study contributes to the literature, academics, and professionals in the management and education of HEIs and other schools, as well as to the school community and governments.
