Tooth cementum is a bone-like mineralised tissue secreted by cementoblasts on the surface of root dentine. It is one of the four tissues that support the teeth in the jaws, i.e. the periodontium. Cementum is a highly responsive mineralised tissue which maintains the integrity of the root and sustains the tooth in its functional position in the mouth and is also involved in tooth repair and regeneration. Cementum by virtue of its structural dynamic qualities provides tooth attachment and maintains occlusal relationship. Fibres in cementum help in tooth anchorage. Certain pathological factors may cause irreversible damage to the cementum, or it is self-reparative to small disturbances.
