Non-traditional Modes of Ventilation
摘要
This chapter deals with non-traditional or unconventional modes of mechanical ventilation, which represent advancements to improve the fundamental functions of the ventilator, overcome the limitations of basic modes as well as enhance the process of the liberation from mechanical ventilation. Additionally, some of the non-conventional modes are geared to address the needs of specific patient populations. We outline how each non-conventional modes addresses specific limitations of conventional modes as well the additional advantages these non-conventional modes confer on patients. We provide an overview of the mechanical, principles of each of the non-conventional modes and how they relate to the patient-ventilator interaction and clinical practice. We also include an overview of the advancement of ventilation to closed-loop systems of ventilation as the next step in the evolution of mechanical ventilation.
