This chapter looks at the practical purposes of notebooks kept by students at the Inns to guide their own learning. It challenges the boundaries between ‘revellers’ and ‘plodders’ to demonstrate how play is used to aid that learning. Exploring the contents of a particular notebook kept by Middle Templars, Adams demonstrates how notes on moots and readings combine with stories a group of law students told one another in their meetings (joco seria) to form a record covering a period from 1611 to 1614. What results is a mixture of explicitly legal topics and both high and low stories, often with jurisprudential themes. The notebooks thus provide evidence of both the writers’ legal education and the use of restorative play to protect hard-working legal students from melancholy.
