PLOV: A Visualization Tool For Exploring Visibility in Family Living Situations

People who want to create useful living spaces typically spent a lot of time and effort rearranging furniture and lighting with support from their visual imagination. A variety of interior design tools (running on 2D, VR, and/or AR setups) exist to help imagine particular arrangements, see how furniture would look under specific lighting, get a sense of the spacing between objects, and navigate from a first-person perspective. However, these applications generally lack the ability to explore how multiple people and pets might visually experience and interact with furniture, lighting, and each other from multiple different perspectives in a living space scenario. Visualization techniques can augment how scenes in such scenarios are displayed and provide insight into how the relative visibility of components from different perspectives affect people’s ability to use the space. To that end, we developed the Perspective Lighting Overlap Visualization (PLOV) tool to help people explore overlaps of perspectives and lighting in living situations. Using PLOV, one can build a room arrangement, assign visual encodings to its perspectives, navigate the scene to explore overlaps in visibility and lighting, and thereby analyze the functionality of the imagined living space without the effort and expense of manipulating furniture and lights in a real physical space. For the first version of PLOV described here, we focused on how the visual channels of hue and texture can be combined to visually encode perspective overlaps on scene surfaces. We conducted a user study to assess the interpretability of the resulting encodings and usability of PLOV overall.
