Supraglottitis (SG) is a potentially life-threatening inflammatory condition of the supraglottic region, commonly caused by bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae type b, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, etc. The incidence of SG has changed since the introduction of the Haemophilus influenzae vaccine. Symptoms and signs of this disease may be nonspecific. It commonly presents with symptoms such as sore throat, odynophagia, dysphagia, and drooling, while children more often present with stridor and fever. Diagnosis is usually made through clinical assessment, identifying signs of erythema and swelling in the supraglottic area, and/or may involve imaging studies. Treatment of SG depends on the severity of symptoms. For mild cases, it may include conservative therapy with intravenous antibiotics with possible additional steroids and closely monitoring the airway. In serious cases, interventions such as intubation, cricothyrotomy, or tracheostomy to secure the airway may be needed.
