Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
摘要
Obstructive sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder that involves cessation or significant decrease in airflow in the presence of breathing effort. It is the most common type of sleep-disordered breathing and is characterised by recurrent episodes of upper airway collapse during sleep. Common risk factors include male sex, age, obesity, cranial facial anatomy resulting in narrow airways and obesity. General symptoms of OSA could be nocturnal, such as snoring, witnessed apnoea, gasping, choking sensations, nocturia and insomnia. Daytime symptoms include non-refreshing sleep, morning headache, excessive daytime sleepiness and fatigue. Diagnosing OSA is dependent on overnight sleep studies or polysomnography. Treatment of OSA partly depends on the patient’s severity of sleep-disordered breathing. Those with mild apnoea have more options, whereas people with moderate-to-severe apnoea should be treated with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).
