Temporal Bone Fracture

Temporal bone fractures are most commonly seen in patients involved in road traffic accidents and are commonest between the second and the fourth decade of life. There is a 3:1 male to female prevalence ratio in sustaining temporal bone fractures. Temporal bone fractures are traditionally classified as longitudinal, transverse, and mixed. Often these fractures are associated with other craniofacial fractures as well as brain injuries, and the management of the temporal bone fractures may vary depending on the coexisting injuries and the general condition of the patient. A hearing test is ultimately required to investigate for sensorineural and conductive hearing loss, although bedside tuning fork exam might be the only way to initially assess the patient’s hearing depending on consciousness and comorbidities. The hearing test should be repeated 6–8 weeks later to allow for resolution of middle ear effusion if present.
