Recent advances in cochlear implant (CI) technology and surgical techniques promise improved auditory outcomes and quality of life for CI users. Key developments include personalized electrode array designs, preoperative planning tools, and gene therapy applications. Technologies such as optogenetic stimulation and energy harvesters such as piezoelectric and triboelectric materials offer potential improvements in auditory perception. Advances in robotic surgery and high-definition 3D exoscopes are helping to improve surgical precision and safety. Recent research in signal processing strategies, including deep learning-based methods, aims to improve speech intelligibility and music perception for CI users. The integration of electro-haptic stimulation and multisensory technologies shows promise for enhancing auditory and cognitive experiences. Ongoing research continues to overcome barriers to the feasibility of fully implantable cochlear implants. As these innovations progress, they have the potential to improve CI functionality and make auditory rehabilitation more effective and personalized. Continued interdisciplinary research is essential to validate and implement these advances, ultimately providing better hearing solutions for CI users.
